Abstract photographs of walls from the historic Pink City of Jaipur; each one seemingly narrating its own story.
The historic walled city of Jaipur (Rajasthan, India), also known as the Pink City, was founded centuries ago, in 1727. A UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the oldest planned cities in India, its main roads or bazaars have been maintained over the years and retain quite a bit of their original ‘look’. In some of its narrow lanes or rastas however, change is more evident. Weathering, decay, repair, paint, even advertising, have left their marks, particularly on the walls.
During walks in the walled city in 2007 and 2010, Mayank observed that many of the walls have undergone their own unique experiences or changes over the years. They seemed to be quietly, and beautifully, narrating their stories — which this series of fine art photographs attempts to depict. The walls have been showcased as pieces of art in their own right and the story of each one is left to the viewers’ interpretation. These images try to highlight a lesser, quieter aspect of the Jaipur walled city — away from the limelight of its main bazaars and monuments — that also deserves to be appreciated, for these are the building blocks of the city.
The Pink City: Stories on Walls is a collection of 36 unique photographs (25 have been published here). They are available as limited edition digital prints on archival quality paper or canvas (Edition: 12). Print sizes: 22 x 16 or 16 × 12 inches. Some of the images can be printed as large as 36 x 24 inches.
